How does a tech sleep at night?
When a cybersecurity incident happens after hours, who is watching your business?
As an IT professional, I stay awake at night thinking, “There could be a security breach at anytime.”
What helps me? By having the right security tools and processes in place—even when I’m not working.
Let me share a recent real-world example of why that matters.
A Cybersecurity Incident After Hours
Recently, one of our clients experienced a security incident outside normal business hours.
An employee received a phishing email containing a malicious file. Unfortunately, the employee opened and ran the file, which installed a rogue remote support tool on their computer.
Think about that for a moment.
A malicious actor potentially had a way to remotely access a business computer. Depending on what happened next, that access could have led to stolen files, compromised credentials, ransomware, or even a much larger network breach.
And this all happened after hours.
Fortunately, Someone Was Watching
One of the security solutions we use at TruTech IT Solutions includes a 24/7 Security Operations Center (SOC) staffed by security professionals who monitor and respond to threats.
When this incident occurred, the SOC responded.
They locked down the affected computer and remediated the malicious files, helping prevent the incident from turning into something much worse.
The best part?
I didn’t have to spend the night scrambling to contain an active threat.
The security team had already handled the immediate response.
My job afterward was to verify the cleanup, make sure the computer was operating normally, and confirm the user could get back to work. Then I could start the investigation in to what was accessed.
That’s how a tech sleeps at night.
What Could Have Happened Without That Protection?
Imagine the same situation without security monitoring and an experienced team ready to respond.
A malicious remote connection could potentially go unnoticed for hours—or even days.
During that time, an attacker might:
- Steal sensitive business files, including financial documents, customer information, or confidential company records.
- Deploy ransomware, encrypting files and potentially bringing business operations to a halt.
- Steal passwords and credentials, gaining access to email, cloud services, or other business systems.
- Move to other computers, turning a single compromised workstation into a larger security incident.
- Cause significant downtime and financial losses, leaving the business facing recovery expenses and potentially lasting reputational damage.
Not every attack results in these outcomes, but the risks are real.
The difference between a minor security incident and a major business disruption can come down to how quickly a threat is detected and contained.
Why We Believe in Layers of Security
You might be thinking, “Shouldn’t email security have blocked the phishing email in the first place?”
Ideally, yes.
And that’s exactly why we use multiple layers of protection.
At TruTech IT Solutions, our security approach includes solutions such as:
- Email Security: Helps identify and block malicious emails, phishing attempts, and dangerous attachments before they reach employees.
- Web Filtering: Helps prevent users from accessing known malicious websites and dangerous online content.
- Endpoint Protection: Monitors computers for suspicious activity and malicious software.
- 24/7 Security Operations Center: Provides around-the-clock threat monitoring and response, even when our regular IT support team is off the clock.
No single security solution is going to stop 100% of threats.
Phishing emails can slip through filters. Employees can make mistakes. Attackers continually change their techniques.
That’s why layered security matters.
When one security layer misses something, another layer can still detect and stop the threat.
This recent incident is a perfect example.
Peace of Mind Isn’t About Hoping Nothing Happens
Cybersecurity isn’t about promising that your business will never experience a threat.
It’s about being prepared for when something does happen.
For our client, what could have become a significant security incident was quickly contained and remediated. Instead of facing a potentially lengthy recovery, we were able to focus on verifying the cleanup and getting the employee back to normal operations.
And for me?
I can sleep at night knowing that even when I’m not watching, we have experienced security professionals and multiple layers of protection helping watch over our clients.
That’s the kind of peace of mind we want every business owner to have.
